The\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0of\u00a0Fitr<\/em>\u00a0is due on every Muslim who is alive part of\u00a0Ramadan<\/em>\u00a0and part of\u00a0Shawwal<\/em>\u00a0(the month after\u00a0Ramadan<\/em>.) According to\u00a0Imam ash-Shafi^iyy<\/em>, the due\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0for each is a \u201csa^\u201d<\/em>\u00a0or four \u201cmudd<\/em>s\u201d (the fill of a pair of average-sized hands cupped together) of the most common staple food of one\u2019s area. However, according to\u00a0Imam Abu\u00a0Hanifah<\/em>, the due\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0is three \u201cmudd<\/em>s\u201d of wheat or six \u201cmudd<\/em>s\u201d of dates, barley or raisins. Alternatively, one may pay the value of these \u201cmudd<\/em>s\u201d.\u00a0In the USA, it is estimated to be about $ 14.00 (2022)<\/strong>. One intends that any amount in excess of the due\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0is given as a charitable donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is an obligation upon the Muslim to pay the due\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0for one and one\u2019s Muslim dependants if on the day of the Feast of\u00a0Fitr<\/em>\u00a0(^Id-ul- Fitr<\/em>) and the night after it one has enough to meet one\u2019s debts, clothing, lodging, and sustenance, and the sustenance of those whom one must support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man must pay the\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0of\u00a0Fitr<\/em>\u00a0for his wife, non-pubescent children, and poor Muslim parents, in the school of Imam Ash-Shafi^iyy. In the school of Imam Abou\u00a0Hanifah the wife pays her own\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0. He may not pay for his pubescent children or solvent parents without their permission. It is permissible to pay the\u00a0Fitr<\/em>\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0any time during\u00a0Ramadan<\/em>, even on the first night. However, it is recommended to pay it during the day of the Feast and before the\u00a0^Id<\/em>\u00a0Prayer, because this mends the hearts of the poor people before the Prayer. It is prohibited to delay paying the\u00a0Fitr<\/em>\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0until after the sunset of the day of the Feast without an excuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recipients of Zakah<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For all types of\u00a0Zakah<\/em>, the intention is obligatory upon setting one\u2019s\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0portion aside or paying it to the deserving people.\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0must be paid to the eight categories of Muslims deserving of\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0as mentioned explicitly in the\u00a0Q<\/em>ur\u2019an<\/em>\u00a0(at-Tawbah, 61<\/em>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Those (who are poor) who earn less than half their basic needs (al-fuqara\u2019<\/em>);<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Those (who are poor) who earn half, but less than what meets all their basic needs (al-masakin<\/em>);<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. The\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0workers who are assigned by the caliph (al-^amiluna ^alayha<\/em>);<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. The new converts to\u00a0Islam<\/em>\u00a0whose hearts are to be reconciled (al-mu\u2019allafatu\u00a0qulubuhum<\/em>);<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. The slaves who are short in satisfying their contract for purchasing their freedom from their owners (ar-riqab<\/em>);<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Those who are unable to pay their debts (al-gharimun<\/em>);<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. The volunteer fighters (fi\u00a0sabilillah<\/em>);<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. The travelers who do not have enough to enable them to reach their destination (ibn-us-sabil<\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    It is neither permissible nor valid to pay\u00a0Zakah<\/em>\u00a0to other than those eight types of Muslims specifically mentioned above.
